Mooning seems like an innocent phrase and in one form of use it is. However this dictation focuses on the coarser usage of the word in English. While the gesture dates back for many centuries, you'll learn that the name is a much more modern invention.
- behave or move in a listless and aimless manner.E.g. I don't want her mooning about in the morning
- expose one's buttocks to someone in order to insult or amuse them.E.g. the crew dropped their trousers and mooned at them
If you prefer your gestures to be a little less offensive, you want to check out our dictation of the history of the "thumbs-up" gesture, though that appears to have a rather dark and violent history.

Listen to the complete text from start to finish.
Mooning is the act of displaying your bare buttocks at another person. It should come as no surprise that this crude gesture is intended to express disrespect of another. Though the act of exposing buttocks is thought to date back to the middle ages, the term mooning is probably much more modern. In fact the term is believed to have entered into common slang during the 1960s, when the gesture became more popular among students in the USA.
Now listen to the slower version and type what you hear into the text box.
