As you'll learn from this short dictation exercise, emoticons were the forerunners of emojis. Nowadays, most messaging apps contain a huge number of emojis to help you express yourself with fewer words.

In the early days of online messaging, a few emoticons were the only options available to users looking to make their messages clearer.

emoticon
ɪˈməʊtɪkɒn Listen
Meanings
noun
  • a representation of a facial expression such as a smile or frown, formed by various combinations of keyboard characters and used to convey the writer's feelings or intended tone.
E.g. flag your jokes with emoticons, such as a smiley face :-), to avoid misunderstandings

Have you ever stopped to think about why emojis came to be? While they're often used to inject some fun into messages, the original emoticons we intended make the writer's message clearer.

Imagine if you're talking to someone face to face. You could say something outrageous, but the look on your face would make it clear that you were joking. The original emoticons were meant to serve a similar purpose.

Emoticons or emotion icons are simple pictorial representations of facial expressions using keyboard characters. The first emoticons are thought to have been written by a computer scientist in 1982, who combined several punctuation marks to represent happy and sad faces. Intended to help express how the writer is feeling, emoticons have largely been replaced by emojis that offer a much broader range of icons to communicate without using words.

Now listen to the slower version and type what you hear into the text box.
