When you listen to this dictation about skateboarding, you'll learn that their history in the USA dates back many decades. Interestingly, I can recall as a kid how they only started to become popular in the UK in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Now the past time is popular around the world and has even gone as far as to become an official sport. This dictation will quickly introduce to a history of skateboarding and share with you when it first featured as an Olympic sport.

Skateboarding first started in California during the 1950s. The first skateboards were made by attaching roller skate wheels to wooden boards, but by 1959, companies had started manufacturing skateboards. Skateboarding was initially known as "sidewalk surfing" and it's thought it was popular with the surfing community.

Over time it has developed into a past time that's popular with a wide range of people of all ages. In 2020, for the first time, skateboarding featured as one of the sports in the Summer Olympic Games, with Japan winning three of the four gold medals on offer.

Now listen to the slower version and type what you hear into the text box.
