I think this dictation is fascinating because few people realize nuclear bombs were dropped on Spain. It may be all the more surprising as Spain wasn't at war with any country at the time.

There's a simple explanation as you'll learn from listening to the dictation.

Interestingly, the US Air Force have dropped nuclear bombs on three countries in total. I'm sure you know Japan and you've probably guessed Spain was another.

The third country?

The USA. In 1961, after taking off with a nuclear bomb, a fault on an American bomber led to the bomb being dropped on a North Carolina farm. Fortunately it didn't explode.

Most people know that the American air force dropped nuclear bombs on Japan, but it's less well known that they also dropped bombs on Spain. Unlike the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the four bombs that fell close to the Spanish town of Palomares in 1966 were the result of an accident. Flying at almost 10,000 meters, an American bomber collided with another aircraft, resulting in three bombs falling close to the town and a fourth falling into the sea. Fortunately the bombs were not armed and so did not explode.

Now listen to the slower version and type what you hear into the text box.
