Cannabis or marijuana is a recreational drug that is illegal in many countries around the world. Some nations have, however, taken a more relaxed view towards the drug and this dictation focuses on the first country to make it legal.

Many people think The Netherlands was the first country to legalize cannabis. However in the 1970s, the Dutch parliament only voted to decriminalize cannabis use. In reality, while some other European countries tolerate cannabis use, the first country to actually legalize the use of cannabis was Uruguay. The recreational use of cannabis was made legal there in 2013.
