Would you believe that Josiah Frisbee created the first frisbee flying disk in 1837? You shouldn't believe that. As you'll discover in this short dictation exercise, the idea for the first flying disk for throwing between friends didn't come about until 100 years later.

And even then, the name frisbee didn't come into common use for another two decades. The actual source of the name isn't entirely clear, though some believe it was named after the Frisbie bakery in Bridgeport, Conneticut.

A frisbee is a flying disk that can be thrown for fun, usually between groups of people, but with some practice, it is possible for one person to throw it and have it return to them. The idea started in 1937 when a young Californian couple were offered 25 cents to sell a cake pan that they were throwing between themselves on a beach. As the pan only cost five cents, they saw a business opportunity. More than ten years later, the first manufactured frisbee was sold, though that name only came into common use a decade later.

Now listen to the slower version and type what you hear into the text box.
