French fries have a few different names depending on where you are in the world, but surely they're one of those simple dishes that everyone loves.

This is a short little dictation that considers their history and some of the different ways they're served.

I still find the Canadian serving method particularly strange, though thinking about it, perhaps it's no stranger than the habit of some British Chinese takeaways to serve them swimming in curry sauce.

French fries or chips, as they are known in Britain, are deep fried strips of potato. They are thought to have originated from Belgium or France and have become a very popular dish around the world. They're enjoyed with many different condiments, such as salt, vinegar, ketchup or mayonnaise. They also form the base of the Canadian dish poutine, which is french fries topped with cheese curds and a brown gravy.

Now listen to the slower version and type what you hear into the text box.
