Nowadays, it might feel a bit odd to talk about single records, with most music now being streamed. None-the-less, the term single is still used to denote a song released by a singer or band.
Singles were initially sold as vinyl records, but with the rise of CDs, vinyl records almost completely died out.
Ironically, as CDs decline in popularity to be replaced by streaming services, vinyl records are actually enjoying a resurgence in popularity.

If you take a look at Wikipedia, you can find a list of the best selling singles of all time. According to that list, the song White Christmas by Bing Crosby has sold 50 million physical copies since its release in 1942, up to 2021. However, if we look at digital sales, the best seller has managed to sell more than 40 million times since 2017. That song is Shape of You by the British singer Ed Sheeran.
